Red Cardinals

In the kingdom of Anabru, where Jakey was King, the cardinals were especially red.

Each morning, one sang his song to get me out of bed.

With feathers so crimson against the green of the tree,

the cardinal sang his little song to me.

"Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!"

Over and over, he chirped his morning tune,

until he flew to the next house, none to soon.

As soon as he left, I could hear in my head,

that little ditty that got me out of bed.

"Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!"

The House of Old and Neglect

In the Kingdom of Anabru, where Jakey was King, there was an old house.
It was so old that no one remembered when it was built.
It was old and neglected and no one lived there.

One day, a man named Norman walked up to the house and looked at it.
He looked at it and looked at it and looked at it.
Then, the house looked at Norman.
And the house began to talk.
And Norman listened.

The house said, "I didn't always look like this."
Norman said, "I know."

Norman went inside the house and listened some more.
He tapped on the walls, tapped on the doors, tapped on the floors.
He listened when the house responded.

"I didn't always have a wall there," the house said.
Norman said, "I'll move it for you."

The house said, "I used to have a door over there."
Norman said, "I'll put one in for you."

"I used to have a kitchen," the house said.
And Norman put in a kitchen.

"I used to have pretty windows."
And Norman put in windows.

"My walls used to be white," said the house.
And Norman painted the walls.

The house said, "I used to have rooms in the basement and the attic."
And Norman built rooms in the basement and the attic.

The house said, "I used to have trees."
And Norman planted trees.

The house said, "I used to be red."
And Norman painted the house red.

The house said, "I used to have people."
And Norman said, "You'll have people again."

The house said, "I used to hear children laughing."
And Norman said, "You'll hear children again."

And one day, as the sun began to rise, the house stood up tall.
It stood up straight.
It shook off the old.
It shrugged off the neglect.
And the house opened its doors and let the people in.

And the house became a home.
